And I went back to the lake Then I found out that each license is only valid for one specific body of water I had three lakes near my house... so I needed three licenses Oh man So I applied for three licenses, paid three times, and waited again. That summer I was only able to enjoy paddle surf in one of the lakes, but it was something Eventually I got them, so the next summer I went back to the lakes. I was finally, fully, completely legal Then a new regulation came in. Life jackets were now mandatory I found out about this while already on the water Three guards in a motorboat came after me at full speed. They told me I had to leave immediately. He ended up losing 5,715€, which, you know, no big deal But Hacienda took that and decided to ruin his life See, in 2011 there was an old Spanish law that taxed poker "winnings" at 47% but didn't allow you to deduct losses. So if you made €86,000 and lost €92,000, the government ignored the losses and taxed you on the full €86,000. This law was insane. Everyone knew it was insane. So in 2012 they changed it But they didn't make the change retroactive Five years later, in 2016, Hacienda sends Vallejo a letter. They've looked back at his 2011 poker account, and saw he had gross winnings of €86,482. They ignored that he lost €92,197. The Southern Cone is basically a different continent ✅ Massive European immigration in the 1800s-1900s ✅ Italian, Spanish, German families built Argentina, Uruguay, Chile from the ground up ✅ The architecture, the food culture, the values... it's genuinely European DNA. Walk through Buenos Aires? You're in a European city that happens to be in South America. Same with Santiago or Montevideo Compare that to Colombia or Ecuador... Indigenous heritage, African influences, mestizo culture. Completely different foundation The food, the music, the pace of life... it's distinctly Latin American One isn't better. But they're different worlds For remote workers wanting "developed country vibes for 1/3 the price" → Southern Cone For people wanting authentic Latin American experience → everywhere else

Unpopular opinion: Rio 🇧🇷 looks more safe than any major city in Colombia 🇨🇴 When in Colombia, I need to keep my guard up 100% of the time, even in the nicer areas However here in Rio, walking on Copa & Ipanema, I felt like I was in Barcelona or a random Mediterranean beach in Spain 🇪🇸 Definitely not safe… but safer than in Colombia 🇨🇴

I complain about Spain a lot High taxes. Bureaucracy. The mindset that keeps people trapped in expensive cities But let me be honest: Spain is objectively one of the best countries in the world ✅ The food is unmatched Jamón ibérico, patatas bravas, fresh seafood that costs €3. The culture around eating is actually about enjoying life ✅ The people are warm and real Spaniards will tell you the truth, even if it hurts. They're not performative like Silicon Valley types. They actually live instead of optimize for social media ✅ The weather is insane 300+ days of sun. You can be at the beach or mountains within 2 hours from most places. Winter means 15°C and sunshine, not freezing darkness. It honestly spoiled me for almost anywhere else ✅ The cities are architectural masterpieces Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Valencia, San Sebastián. Most countries would kill to have ONE city as beautiful as any of these ✅ The variety of environments is crazy Mediterranean beaches, Pyrenees mountains, Basque Country forests, desert-like regions in the south, wine regions. Everything in one small country My issue with Spain isn't Spain itself It's the system that makes people choose between: - Staying and being trapped in an expensive coastal city working for €1,200/month - Leaving everything behind to find opportunity elsewhere If you can escape the Spanish employment trap (remote work, entrepreneurship, location independence), Spain becomes one of the best places to live on Earth
