I've developed a lot of plugin systems, and the OpenAI ChatGPT plugin interface might be the damn craziest and most impressive approach I've ever seen in computing in my entire life.

This is going to be ironic coming from me but the best software engineers I've ever worked with and that you can ever hire are the ones with no online presence, no GitHub activity, and spent the last 10 years of their life working at the most boring company you can ever imagine.

I can understand engineers who use Linux. I can understand engineers who use macOS. I really don’t understand engineers who use Windows (except windows app developers). By understand I mean I can see the value system they operate under. It just seems bad for non-Windows dev work

I know this is pretty well established at this point, but Codex 5.3 is a much more effective model than Opus 4.6. I went back and forth on both for a bit, but haven’t touched Opus at all now for a full week. First model to get me off of Opus… ever. Good job Codex team.

Slop drives me crazy and it feels like 95+% of bug reports, but man, AI code analysis is getting really good. There are users out there reporting bugs that don't know ANYTHING about our stack, but are great AI drivers and producing some high quality issue reports. This person (linked below) was experiencing Ghostty crashes and took it upon themselves to use AI to write a python script that can decode our crash files, match them up with our dsym files, and analyze the codebase for attempting to find the root cause, and extracted that into an Agent Skill. They then came into Discord, warned us they don't know Zig at all, don't know macOS dev at all, don't know terminals at all, and that they used AI, but that they thought critically about the issues and believed they were real and asked if we'd accept them. I took a look at one, was impressed, and said send them all. This fixed 4 real crashing cases that I was able to manually verify and write a fix for from someone who -- on paper -- had no fucking clue what they were talking about. And yet, they drove an AI with expert skill. I want to call out that in addition to driving AI with expert skill, they navigated the terrain with expert skill as well. They didn't just toss slop up on our repo. They came to Discord as a human, reached out as a human, and talked to other humans about what they've done. They were careful and thoughtful about the process. People like this give me hope for what is possible. But it really, really depends on high quality people like this. Ghostty just surpassed Terraform in stars (my previous most-starred project I started). It took Terraform 12 years to reach 48K. Ghostty did it in 1 year. It's bigger than Terraform in active usage, too. I take it personally when people doubt I can outdo my past. I can take credit for starting both, but not for ongoing development (for the successes and failures). Neither project is a solo endeavor. I'm still extremely actively involved with Ghostty, but there's also a team of a dozen maintainers. Terraform I stepped back and stopped working on it directly like 6 or more years ago. I consider stars a vanity metric and I don't care about it at all except in this narrow case. I'm a super competitive person (in general), but particularly/especially against my past self. There's no one I like "winning" more against than my past. So, this is my one exception for caring about stars.

I write a lot of Swift and ship a decently complicated macOS application so I think I'm allowed to have an opinion on this. But, how can anyone like Swift? Seriously it's such a circle jerk of abstraction bullshit. It truly insists upon itself relentlessly. Just horrible.

Look, say what you will about it, but right click editing a PHP file in an FTP client with upload-on-save is still the tightest and fastest feedback loop I've ever had in my life. We actually don't know how to do this anymore as an industry.

I’ve been forcing myself to use the GUI agent apps the past week just to learn. One week isn’t enough experience yet, but I think they all miss the mark (so far) and I’m deeply fighting the urge to do one with my own taste. I’m not gonna do it. I’m not gonna do it.

The chest pumping of the current new wave of SV founders puts a bad taste in my mouth. Just saw a pic of a funded teenage founder showing off his intl business class seat. I still flew coach for 15+ intl flights per year while HC was valued over $2B. I don’t want this to sound like “kids these days can’t afford houses cause they buy avo toast.” It’s not that. The price difference of a coach versus biz seat is huge. And I always wanted to set the right precedent. If the founder of the multi bill company is flying coach so can everyone else in the company (we didn’t allow any biz flights until similar times, although I kept flying coach longer). Won’t call him out because I don’t have the full context and maybe I’m wrong here. And like, I don’t want to shame a teenager and be overly dad mode. But it’s not isolated to that one instance, of course. It seems like everyday young founders funded by big names are just trying to outdo each other on wasteful shit.

I'm not presently hiring, but I think a really effective engineering interview would be to explicitly ask someone to use AI to solve a task, and see how they navigate. Ignore results, the way AI is driven is maybe the most effective tool at exposing idiots I've ever seen.

Here’s what I’d do if I was in charge of GitHub, in order: 1. Establish a North Star plan around being critical infrastructure for agentic code lifecycles and determine a set of ways to measure that. 2. Fire everyone who works on or advocates for copilot and shut it down. It’s not about the people, Im sure theres many talented people, youre just working at the wrong company. 3. Buy Pierre and launch agentic repo hosting as the first agentic product. Repos would be separate from the legacy web product to start since they’re likely burdened with legacy cross product interactions. 4. Re-evaluate all product lines and initiatives against the new North Star. I suspect 50% get cut (to make room for different ones). The big idea is all agentic interactions should critically rely on GitHub APIs. Code review should be agentic but the labs should be building that into GH (not bolted in through GHA like today, real first class platform primitives). GH should absolutely launch an agent chat primitive, agent mailboxes are obviously good. Etc. GH should be a platform and not an agent itself. This is going to be very obviously lacking since I only have external ideas to work off of and have no idea how GitHub internals are working, what their KPIs are or what North Star they define, etc. But, with imperfect information, this is what I’d do.
