I have studied the Civil Rights movement in some depth for many years. We have not seen anything like it since: the training, the discipline, the dignity, the purposefulness. (Not to mention the faith.) Shouting f--- you at the police does not a movement make.

I agree with what I said. But I would not want this to be interpreted as a stance for passivity in the face of a tyrannical government. The American Roman Catholic bishops and Pope Leo are modeling resistance right now.

As long as John the Baptist continures as the central character of the 2nd and 3rd Sundays in Advent, it's clear that the season is focused on radical repentance and apocalyptic expectation, not joy and fun. It's a counterweight to premature celebration. That should be a comfort.

The Twelve Days of Christmas up through Epiphany are so rich. It is good for Christians to model this season by observing it in various ways. Begin by praying through the BCP collects. Continue playing Xmas music. Wish fellow Christians a blessed Christmastide! Have festal meals!

This is All Saints Day. It is saddening to me that whereas it is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church, it is ignored by Prots and overwhelmed by 🎃📷. It should be a day of wholehearted gratitude for those who put us on our path to the living, incarnate Son of God.

I worry that there does not seem to be any kind of serious reflection in the mainlines about what I think could be our "moment." After decades of drift into "woke" preaching with no underlying theology, isn't this the hour for robust resistance to the loss of American's soul?

A message from an Episcopal church announces Advent as a time of "joy" with copious events of "fun" and carol singing. Advent can be rightly construed as "hope" but "joy" comes in the middle of the night, unheralded in a poor stable.

In the past 10 days, I have read a number of serious warnings that AI is moving more swiftly and with more facility than we can keep up with. What will serious Christian thinkers have to say, and how fast can we say it? What is a theology of AI? Can it create a humanity?

Somebody should give Trump a copy of "Ozymandias." But he wouldn't read it. And even if he did read it, he wouldn't understand it. And even if he understood it, he would not "get" it. Now that I think about it, I don't suppose the younger generations have ever heard of it.

Ash Wednesday. I'm not a fan of "ashes to go" or indeed of ashes at all (Mt 6:1-4). And the litany of the 1979 BCP is not as powerful as that of 1928 which I grew up with. But I see it as a day for the relatively few who are present to repent on behalf of the non-present many.

The Calling of St Matthew (Caravaggio) is on my page. When my husband and I were in Rome we went to see it three times. We both voted it our favorite sight in Rome. A reproduction of it is now hanging in his room at The Greens at Greenwich, an Alzheimer's residence.

I'm sad to lose the Epiphany, one of our must beautiful Feasts when properly observed. Two nearby churches observed it 3 days early (!). I can't find any local parish with a service on Jan 6. I wish I could go to the proper one at St Thomas Fifth. It will be livestreamed at 5:30.

If I were younger and stronger I would advocate for a mass meeting (some of it via Zoom etc) of mainline preachers to form some sort of unified resistance. There is a way to preach politics without being partisan. My first book was called The Bible and the New York Times.

This week, the Catholic Bishops are speaking vigorously, armed with Catholic social teaching. Alas, the Protestant churches are so weakened that we don't see them. There was once a National Council of Churches that was a powerful ally for the Civil Rights Movement.
