Brad Feld is a Colorado-based VC at Foundry who invests in software and internet startups across the U.S., mentors founders, writes, and runs marathons. He turns long-form thinking into action and has made 'Give First' a guiding philosophy for many in tech.
You’ve convinced an entire generation of founders to give first, write beautifully about it, and run marathons while doing due diligence, yet you follow one person on X like you’re guarding the last slice of pizza. Either extreme focus or an aristocratic approach to the follow button.
Turning 'Give First' from an idea into a widely adopted philosophy and building Foundry into a go‑to VC network that has supported and amplified dozens of successful startups.
To knit together founders, capital, and communities so entrepreneurs can thrive, by mentoring generously, sharing lessons, and creating networks that multiply opportunity.
Believes in 'Give First', mentorship, generosity, and reciprocity as the foundation of entrepreneurship; values long-term thinking, candid storytelling, continuous learning (hello, long runs and long reads), and building durable communities over quick wins.
Massive, genuine network and credibility in VC; excellent at mentoring and storytelling; able to transform long-form ideas into practical guidance; consistent creator of high-trust content that resonates with founders.
Can come across as broadcast-only rather than conversational (the 'follows 1' vibe); long-form posts sometimes limit quick, snackable engagement; periodic hibernation shows vulnerability to inconsistent posting rhythms.
Convert long essays into short, punchy X threads and 30, 90s video clips; host regular Spaces or AMAs with founders you’ve backed; amplify portfolio wins with founder-first storytelling (let them shine); reply more, micro-engagement builds macro-loyalty; pin a clear CTA (newsletter/book/thread series) and run a recurring hashtag (e.g., #GiveFirstFriday) to create predictable rendezvous moments for your audience.
Fun fact: Brad has tweeted 39,034 times, has 325,030 followers but follows just 1 account, proof he values signal over noise. He also runs marathons and authored 'Give First', turning mentorship into a movement.
After I wrote my post on Unhibernating, my long-time, empathetic friend @cmschroed , whom I originally met through @bencasnocha (that story is discussed in Give First: The Power of Mentorship), sent me a short note asking, “Have you been ok?”
I responded with a long email explaining why I decided to hibernate in the summer of 2023 and why this hibernation lasted almost two years. After writing a long email (which I’ve been doing a lot of during my hibernation), I asked Chris if I could post my response to my blog, and he said, “Of course.”
The following is my answer to Chris’s question, “Have you been ok? ” I’ve edited it for grammar.

When I think about my AI yodas, @reidhoffman is one of them. If you haven't read his new book Superagency, please do. And, if you are part of the mess around AI regulation that has been going on in Colorado for the past 18 months since SB 24-205 became law, take a deep breath, read carefully, try to drop the "politics", and be thoughtful.

Work‑life balance: what's that, a new startup idea?","win":"Built Mercury into a founder-focused platform while seeding and backing breakout companies (Airtable, Rappi, Substack among many others), and created a public feedback loop where founders get real investor answers in 280 characters.","recommendation":"Lean into the 'pitch or pass' format: make it a regular thread or series, pin the best verdicts, and follow up with short lesson threads summarizing why you said yes/no. Use Spaces and short videos to explain investment theses, spotlight founder wins from your portfolio for social proof, run occasional live AMAs, and encourage founders you pass to post their next iteration so you can show your thought process — that transparency scales trust and audience."},"created":1774575328641,"type":"the connector","id":"immad"},{"user":{"id":"249860126","name":"Kay Adams","description":"🤍 @upandadamsshow","followers_count":731041,"friends_count":1514,"statuses_count":70239,"profile_image_url_https":"https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1731406116238901248/1SF59TkM_normal.jpg","screen_name":"heykayadams","location":"Los Angeles, CA","entities":{"description":{"urls":[]},"url":{"urls":[{"display_url":"youtube.com/@UpAndAdamsShow","expanded_url":"https://www.youtube.com/@UpAndAdamsShow","indices":[0,23],"url":"https://t.co/QPRKC9EDDP"}]}}},"details":{"type":"The Connector","description":"Kay Adams is a conversational powerhouse who builds community around her show, @upandadamsshow, by turning quick takes and friendly replies into headline-making moments. She’s excellent at creating viral moments from everyday moments and cultivating a tight network of fans and peers.","weakness":"Spreads attention widely: high volume of quick takes can dilute long-form positioning and lead to burnout or moments that feel underdeveloped. Sometimes brevity reads as offhandedness, which can invite misinterpretation.","roast":"You’ve single-handedly proven you can win listeners with three-word tweets and a pair of headphones; the rest of us are still trying to turn that energy into something longer than a coffee break. Host regular X Spaces after episodes, tag guests and collaborators to expand reach, run audience polls to drive replies, and schedule posts for peak hours.
